Adding a garbage chute to an apartment block comes with lots of advantages. When residents no longer need to walk up and down the stairs with their rubbish, maintaining high hygiene standards is easier. Naturally, you'll want to know that the chute itself will stay hygienic as well. By incorporating some maintenance ideas into your cleaning routine, your garbage chutes will remain safe for use.

Focus on the width of bags

Ideally, all the rubbish that goes down your chute will be in a bag. It's wise to let your residents know that the bags should run smoothly down the chute. To achieve this, they need to stay below a particular width before attempting to push the bag downward. Make it clear that any bag that requires force may not make its way down the chute, which then increases the risk of a blockage.

Bag all the rubbish appropriately

If some of your block's residents are first-time chute users, they may need some tips on how to bag their rubbish appropriately. Advise them to not overfill their bags and request that they don't use thin bags that are likely to break. You may also want to inform them that sharp items that will cause bag tears are likely to cause a hygiene hazard as well. Wherever possible, broken glass should be disposed of elsewhere.

Watch out for rubbish chute cracks

Like all essential items, rubbish chutes are prone to wear and tear. Although you can ignore scratches and scuffs, cracks require your immediate attention. When you go to inspect your apartments, look out for cracks and repair them immediately. Any cracks that are left unchecked will become magnets for food particles, which means bacteria will soon proliferate there and cause a hygiene problem.

Routinely sanitise the chute

Rubbish chutes require regular cleaning to keep foul smells at bay. Although you won't be able to reach the inside of the chute easily, you can pay close attention to the entry and exit points. To tackle the rest of the chute, flush water and strong cleaning solutions through it. Always make sure there's adequate ventilation as you do this to keep yourself and your residents safe.

When you add a garbage chute to your apartment block, maintaining high hygiene standards requires efforts from yourself and the block's residents. With a combination of easy-to-follow rules and regular maintenance interventions, your chute will continue serving its purpose for years to come.
