When you go to the trouble of investing in flooring that's aesthetically pleasing, you'll want to do what you can to keep it that way. If you've invested in wood flooring, this usually means doing what you can to help it stay shiny. Here are some simple tips for doing so.

Vacuum Weekly

Vacuum at least once a week to make sure your wood flooring doesn't look dull. This includes the rooms that you don't use regularly. Although a little dust may not sound harmful at first, it can cause your floor to look dull over time. Dust that has a chance to move around slowly and inflict scratches that can reduce your floor's shine. When you do vacuum, make sure you use the most appropriate head and setting for your floor so that you don't introduce scuffs during the process.

Wipe Spillages Immediately

Whether you spill a glass of wine or a bit of food, it's important to wipe it up immediately. Spillages can cause water stains that are difficult to lift. Once they have a chance to settle in, they can leave your floor looking dull. Some may also contain acidic substances that affect your floor's shine. The longer those acidic substances have contact with your floor, the more likely it is they'll affect its appearance.

Banish Shoes

The same shoes that are tough enough to keep your feet safe while you're outdoors really shouldn't come into contact with your floor. The soles are likely to scuff it, resulting in it wearing down over time. When you wear shoes that have picked up stones and dirt from outside, they're likely to introduce scratches. Heels are particularly harmful, as they could inflict dents on your floor that are difficult for you to lift. When guests enter your home, make it clear to them that they need to ditch their shoes at the door. You may want to offer them slippers or socks to make this task easier.

Use a Floor Polisher

From time to time, your floor will require a special touch to help it stay shiny. Try using a floor polisher once or twice a year. Floor polishers buff the surface of your flooring and help it stay shiny. They can remove any dullness and scratches that build up over time. After using yours, you may want to apply an appropriate sealant to lock in the shine. If you're unsure as to which sealant is most appropriate, try asking a professional.
